Royal College of Art graduate Max Hattler has shown his experimental short films at hundreds of festivals worldwide including Rotterdam, EMAF, Resfest, Annecy Animation Festival and Animafest Zagreb. His films ‘Collision’ and ‘Drift’ won several prizes including the LUX Award for Best Experimental Film and Best Digital Film at London International Animation Festival. Max has made music videos for several bands, and has performed live audio-visuals across Europe, the US and Japan, including London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, Media Art Friesland, The Animation Show, and SuperDeluxe Tokyo. He has taught animation at Goldsmiths College, London and Volda University College, Norway. Max Hattler divides his time between working independently as an artist, and as a director with animation studios Bermuda Shorts (London), Storm Studios (Oslo), and Autour de Minuit (Paris).

“I am interested in the space between abstraction and figuration, where storytelling is freed from the constraints of traditional narrative. My work contemplates microcosms, moments, atmospheres: Close-ups as reflections on the big picture. While my films tend to be without dialogue, they explore the relationship between sound, music and the moving image.”
